This project implemented a design program to create unifying aesthetics for the College’s Health Science program. Every inch of the design was informed by Health Science’s focus on the body’s potential, strength, and movement.
The existing building’s structure was in good condition — but the project team felt it was necessary to remove a majority of the existing conditions, with the exception of the structural shell, to accommodate the proposed design program and aesthetic. This helped to simplify the renovation by allowing the existing building to blend in, even with a new design. The existing building facade, primarily brick, was repaired and received cladding around existing windows to match the detailing of the new building addition. Inside, large openings were made within the façade of the existing building so the spaces could be easily intertwined and connected by a grand, interior court. The Design Team was challenged to create a large visual impact on State Street, while sticking to a tight budget. This was achieved by eliminating interior corridors and focusing most of the building circulation to an atrium. We also were able to elevate the visual impact by focusing major design elements toward the front of the building. The back of the building, which faces a small parking lot, was limited to simple and inexpensive materials in order to preserve budget.
