Today, higher education institutions are revamping their support spaces to align with the evolving preferences of students. Acknowledging the pivotal role of food in creating a sense of community and gathering, modern dining facilities offer a diverse range of options and services. This flexibility enables students to choose dining solutions that suit their specific requirements, schedules, and budgets, fostering an environment that facilitates their overall growth and success.
Through our work with Chartwells Higher Education, Phase Zero Design has been a part of this transformation in colleges and universities across the nation. A few of our upcoming projects include work at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, American University, Quinnipiac University, Fitchburg State University, and Babson College.
By paying close attention to students’ needs, we have identified five key elements that transform dining within a campus:

Technology Integrations
In an era where technology is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of daily life, higher education dining facilities should not be left behind. The incorporation of mobile applications has become a game-changer in providing students with a more personalized and efficient dining experience. Mobile apps empower students with information ranging from menu options to allergy details and nutritional information, enabling them to make well-informed choices about the food they consume. The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) meal planners not only cater to dietary requirements but enhances the overall meal planning process. Moreover, feedback mechanisms can be integrated within these apps to allow continuous improvement based on student input. Additionally, students can use the app to keep track of dining hall events, manage their dining dollars or student plans, and even reserve a table, ensuring a seamless and tech-savvy dining experience.

Designing for Accessibility & Convenience
Understanding the busy and dynamic lifestyle of students is paramount in designing modern dining spaces. Campuses are strategically placing pick-up areas and food lockers throughout, allowing students to grab a meal on the go after ordering from mobile apps. The availability of these strategically located pick-up points ensures that students can access meals without disrupting their schedules, providing a solution for those with tight timelines between classes, study sessions, or extracurricular activities. Additionally, many modern dining facilities are incorporating self-service kiosks. These kiosks offer a solution to the common issue of long lines during peak dining hours. By allowing students to place their food orders through user-friendly touchscreens, the process is not only expedited but also offers a level of customization to cater to individual preferences and dietary restrictions. The introduction of a simple scan-in process further enhances efficiency by streamlining the entry process, saving time and contributing to a smoother flow of operations within the dining facility.

While the ability to grab food on the go has become indispensable on college campuses, dining spaces are still lively social hubs.
